***NEW*** I have a second run at a family tree. It is automatically generated from a data file. If you have any information about Coccaro's around the world, I'd love to hear about it.
I also have a graphical image of the family tree. And there is a gif image of the tree you can view, and there's a postscript file you can print tree-letter-all.ps.
If you are a Coccaro or a Porfido, or are related, and aren't listed here, PLEASE ADD YOURSELF!!! And ANYONE ELSE IN YOUR FAMILY
My dad, Richard Albert Coccaro grew up in Greenwich Village, New York City. His parents, Barbato Coccaro and Giuseppina Porfido Coccaro, were from the small town of Valle Dell'Angelo, in southern Italy. Valle Dell'Angelo is due west of Paestum, and due south of Eboli.
I believe the name "Coccaro" derives from Cuccaro, which is the name of a small town south of Valle Dell'Angelo. Cuccaro, in turn, comes from the Greek, "Kuks Karos", meaning mountaintop.
My mother, Lorraine Ruth Spengler Coccaro grew up in Jersey City NJ, and in Salem, NY a small town in upstate New York, near the Battenkill. Her parents, Paul Spengler and Helen Wondracek Spengler were both born in the US. Paul Spengler's parents were born somewhere in Germany. Helen's father is from Bohemia, and her mother is from Grenoble, France.
My brother, Adam, is a Grad student at NYU, studying medieval literature.
My cousin, Alexander Sanchez, is a successful criminal defense attorney in the Bronx.
