Outdoor
Volunteer Love the outdoors? Love wildlife, the environment, clean
water? Enjoy hiking? Volunteering on outdoor projects for different
organizations such as the US Forest Service, Indian Peaks Working
Group, BLM, etc, are great ways to enjoy the outdoors, plus return
something to the health of the environment. Volunteers
for Outdoor Colorado is a great organization that connects
volunteers with projects sponsered by different organizations,
including the VOC itself. Volunteer for a day, a weekend, a week, or a
whole summer! Projects include trail repair crew, wildlife surveys,
user impact surveys, and many other diverse projects. Colorado too far
west? For those in the east, the Appalachian Mountain Club (AMC) has a
lot of public service opportunities, short and longer term. Or on your
own schedule - check out: the AMC's section on volunteer opportunities.

Wilderness Survival:
I'm currently learning about wild edible plants, and building shelters
(No, I'm not a "the end of the world is coming, the UN is invading,
let's stock up on weapons and food and fight the federalis"
survivalist).
Fishing can
restore a sense of sanity. If one ever had it. I learned how to fish
on a small Pennsylvania trout stream. I'm getting the hang of fly
fishing, the only way to go in most of Colorado. I also fish around my
parent's house in Florida.

Black widow
spiders: I had a pet black widow
spider. Found her in my house, and didn't have the heart to kill
her. She died of old age. Watching her attack and suck the life out of
crickets was somewhat entertaining.
